Greek Pastitsio

Total Time: 2 hrs 15 mins Preparation Time: 1 hr 30 mins Cook Time: 45 mins

Ingredients

  • 750 g pasta, size 2
  • 750 g minced meat
  • 100 ml olive oil
  • 1 cup beef stock
  • 2 large onions, finely chopped
  • 5 garlic cloves, crushed
  • 2 fresh tomatoes, diced or 500 g tomato puree
  • 4 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 1 handful mixed herbs
  • 3 cinnamon sticks
  • 1 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons salt
  • pepper
  • 1 cup olive oil
  • 1 1/2 cups flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1200 ml milk
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 cup mizithra cheese
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons nutmeg

Recipe

  • 1 meat sauce
  • 2 saute onions in oil and add minced meat
  • 3 add the rest of the ingredients and simmer on low for 45 minute.
  • 4 remove cinnamon sticks.
  • 5 bechamel sauce.
  • 6 heat oil, add flour, stir and cook for 2 minutes.
  • 7 add milk very gradually stirring all the time.
  • 8 remove from heat.
  • 9 cool a little and add eggs.
  • 10 then add mitzithra and nutmeg.
  • 11 place ½ the macaroni into a dish and salt a little.
  • 12 add minced meat and then the rest of macaroni.
  • 13 pour bechamel sauce on top.
  • 14 sprinkle with mitzithra.
  • 15 bake at 180c for 45 minuits.
